State Dual Championships
Despite a much smaller group in the wrestling room from day one, things were business as usual for Marty Hutsell and company. Win State titles and produce State Champions. Looking to reload instead of rebuild the kids realized this past weekend all their hard work was paying off and despite a 2nd round lost to eventual Champions Gilmer County, the squad persevered and captured a very respectable 4th place in a deep field of tough AAA teams. Even though the 4A and 5A classes tend to get most of the recognition for being the toughest classes in the state, most will agree that this year AAA is right there in the mix as far as depth of talent. That being said the HC boys will hit the mat in 3 weeks for another chance at several individual State Championships as well as a possible team title at Traditional State on February 15th, 16th and 17th.

Area 4 AAA Duals Championships
It's a rarity that there are 2 defending State Champions teams in the same area, Area 4 had the AA defending Traditional Champs in West Laurens and the AAAA defending Dual Champs in Henry County. The day actually moved quite quickly with the Hawks blazing through their pool undefeated and the same for West Laurens. The finals approached shortly after lunch and neither team despite already qualifying for the State Dual tournament didn't want to give an inch as both were looking forward to defending the crown from the year before. The dual was back and fourth coming down to the last several weights with the Warhawks falling short but capturing a well deserved 2nd place.

Chattahoochee Invitational
The meat of the season is definitely upon us, with region duals right around the corner the Warhawks traveled to Chattahoochee High School for another tough individual tournament. Missing 2 starters in Womack (140) and Parker (285) the Henry squad was still looking to make a mark amongst arguably some of the states best teams in 5A Parkview and 1A Jefferson. Surprisingly enough the hawks dug deep and placed 9 kids overall with 2 champs, the biggest surprise on the night came when Tim Vlcek (152) pinned state champ Matlack from Parkview in the finals and taking home the Most Outstanding Wrestler award. Tyler Faulkner also brought home a championship at the 160 pound weight class. Henry County wound up placing behind the 2 state powerhouse teams with a solid third place. Congrats to all the warhawks for their continued success.

Ola Duals
Rivals in sports are quite common and even though Ola just opened this year the tension between these two teams was noticeable when the Warhawks took the mat against the Mustangs last night. After blowing out Griffin 82-0 and rolling through Jackson, the squad looked to shut out the new program at Ola but fell short of the shut out but beating them handily 52-18. There were a few close matches but overall the Warhawks let it be known there are still the top team in Henry County and defending State Champs even without the usual line up at 140 (Womack) and 160 (Faulkner). Congrats to the boys for climbing their dual record back up to 500.

Kyle Maynard Duals
Day three of the grinding 3 day holiday dual world tour placed the battle worn warhawks at the 2nd annual Kyle Maynard Duals at Collins Hill in Suwannee, GA. Coming off a 6th place at Cherokee just a day before the boys were ready to toe the line for 5 more duals. With a very deep field of tough out of state teams the Hawks didn’t fair so well going 1-4 on the day but improving regardless. “We didn’t expect to come here and win all these duals” said Coach Marty Hustsell. “We wanted to mentally prepare these kids for the real part of their season coming up, they don’t realize 14 duals in 3 days is approaching a national record. They are tired today but will be much tougher come mid January and February when it counts.” The squad is back in action against Ola and Jackson Thursday, January 4th.

Cherokee Duals
The Cherokee Christmas Duals wasn’t as deep in Gerogia talent as the previous weekend’s Dirty South Classic but there was plenty of out of state competition to keep the attending Georgia teams on their toes. The 4 returning teams from the previous weekend included Henry County, McEachern (Dirty South Champs), Kell and the host team Cherokee.
The warhawks now short four starters began the grueling weekend marathon at the 2 day Cherokee tournament of nine total duals and then traveling to Collins Hill for five more duals following the tournament. The boys didn’t give anyone too much respect early on nearly edging a solid team in Kell eventually loosing by 8 points. The squad got on the board with their first win of the tournament by beating Lakeland, FL Friday, then winning 2 more duals on the day defeating Lee, VA and Bishop McGuiness, LA. Day 2 brought tougher competition as the hawks came out of the box strong scooting by a very solid Grissom, AL team then dropping their next 3 in a row to McEachern, Mason, OH and the host team Cherokee. Believe it or not a complete and healthy Henry County squad could have possibly made it into the finals. Look to see a 100% Warhawk squad at Area Duals in mid January.

Dirty South Classic
The Dirty South Classic could be heralded as one, if not the toughest individual tournament in Georgia, State tournament included. Never the less the Henry County squad injured battered and all made the trip to Cherokee High to give it their best against the state’s best in all classifications. The Dirty featured way too many powerhouse teams to name but AAA specifically which some claim to be tougher than AAAA this year had all of them it seemed. From Columbus, Cass, West Laurens, Gilmer and Gainesville all the top AAA teams were in attendance to show their depth and where they stack up against the sometimes assumed tougher classes AAAA and AAAAA.
Although most expected McEachern to win, West Laurens made a very solid run at the team title putting a ton of kids in the finals, but falling short of McEachern in the team point race. The lone standouts for the Henry squad were Justin Hawkins battling through a ridiculous 119 field to take WELL deserved 3 rd and Jonathon Parker Survived the thick heavyweight field to take a solid 6 th place.

Tiger Calssic
The Tiger Classic at Stockbridge High generates a little more buzz each year as more and more tough teams are starting to attend. Besides the fact Stockbridge is a AAAA front running team as well as AAAAA powerhouse Union Grove who has attended in years past, several newer teams such as AAA front runner Cass with a load of talent is starting to be regulars at this tournament. With the Hawks not at full strength missing Jake Womack (broken foot) and Tim Vlcek (Staph / Epstein Barr) the boys would have to make up for the wholes by wrestling flawless over the 2 day tournament.
Evan Warrington breezed through the 103 pound field pinning Mosher from Cass in the finals, previous weeks champion Justin Middlebrooks took a solid 4 th in a tough 112 pound field, Justin Hawkins lost to a top AAA 119 pound contender in Martin to take 2nd, Anthony Fretwell battled back avenging 2 previous losses to take a well deserved 3rd place at 135, Randy Brown surprised the 171 field by clawing his way to a 3rd place win and scoring big points for the warhawks, Brown is a huge asset to the Henry squad as a first year wrestler, look for big things in January from this kid. Tyler Faulkner rounded out the top of the field by avenging his previous weekend’s loss to Bradley Banks beating him in the finals by one point.

South Metro Report
This years South Metro tournament wasn’t as deep in some weight classes as years past, however, there definitely was some pre tourney marquis match ups that the crowd was treated to over the 2 days of this 32+ team tournament. With the expansion of more high schools in the South Metro area more and more teams are being added each year to this tournament mixed in with the old veteran schools. The warhawks squad was almost at full strength with returning South Metro champs Tyler Faulkner and Tim Vlcek, with added surprise finalist 112 pound Justin Middlebrooks the Hawks made a decent splash as the 4th place team overall with one champ in Justin Middlebrooks.
In the finals Middlebrooks squared off against his Starr’s Mill opponent cradling him for the pin and the 112 pound championship. Tim Vlcek battling Epstein Barr virus met nationally touted Carrington Banks in the finals and couldn’t overcome Bank’s quick takedowns as Vlcek settled for 2nd to a top notch opponent. Tyler Faulkner faced Bradley Banks younger brother to Carrington in the finals and it was nothing short of a 4th of July fireworks show coming down to the last period with Banks scoring a takedown to secure the win. These two will possibly see one another next weekend at the Tiger Classic. Congratulations to the Warhawks for 4th team overall placing.

Parkview Duals report
The Warhawks started the season off this week at the Thanksgiving Parkview Duals, the HC squad faced, Gilmer, Hill Crest SC, Central Gwinnett, Parkview and Forsyth Central. Though not working with a full line up due to illness and injury the Warhawks managed to squeeze out one dual meet win against Central Gwinnett with key wins from Evan Warrington, Jonathon Parker, Tyler Faulkner and others. The Squad will definitely need to build its new talent in the line up as well as rely on its returning veterans to jumpstart the squad into the season with more dual meet victories.
